Diabetics Returned Blood Glucose Levels Back to Normal Range: New Study Shows Blood Glucose Levels in Diabetic Rats Returned to Normal Ranges After Drinking Herbal Tea Twice A Day For One Month.

Olive leaf from the olive tree is native to the Mediterranean and middle east and has for centuries been claimed to have medicinal values including anti-diabetic and blood sugar lowering activities.  Much attention has been focused on using natural products as an alternative therapy for treatment of many diseases, including diabetes mellitus but the efficacy of such treatments has often been questioned.

Recently, several studies have examined the efficacy of using olive leaf in stabilizing blood sugar levels and treating diabetes.  A recent study published in 2014 in the Global Journal of Scientific Research (A Possible Antioxidant Effect of Olive Leaf Extraction in Diabetic Rats, Zoair, et al. GJSR Journal. Vol. 2(6), pp. 165-170, March 31, 2014) showed that olive leave tea taken twice daily for 30 days played an important role in inhibiting hyperglycemia and ameliorating metabolic abnormalities induced by diabetes.

In this study, thirty male albino rats were separated into 3 groups; Group 1 (the Control Group), Group 2 (the Diabetic Group) and Group 3 (the Diabetic Group that received olive leaf tea).  Diabetes was induced in the animals in Group 2 and Group 3 by injection of alloxan in saline and the control rats in Group 1 were injected with saline alone as a placebo.  The diabetic state of the rats in Group 2 and Group 3 was monitored for stability for seven successive days after the injection; only animals with fasting blood glucose levels greater than 300 mg/dl on the 8th day after the injection were selected as diabetic rats for the experiment.

The groups of rats were monitored for 30 days but only Group 3 was given olive leaf tea twice a day at 8 am and 8 pm for 30 day.  The olive leaf tea was prepared by harvesting fresh olive leaves which were dried in the shade, and then powdered with a blender.  Olive leaf tea was prepared by boiling the plant powder (2g) with 200ml distilled water for 15 min.  The obtained extract was allowed to cool to room temperature then filtered through a paper filter.

At the end of the 30 days the researchers collected blood samples from all 30 rats.  The researchers found that the diabetic rats in Group 2 that were not given the olive leaf tea had a significant decrease in levels of serum insulin (-40.67%) and significant elevation in levels of blood glucose (234.17%) as compared to the control group.  However, significantly, the diabetic rats in Group 3 that were given the olive leaf tea twice a day had normal levels of serum insulin and normal levels of blood glucose as compared to the control group.  The initial elevated insulin and blood glucose levels in the diabetic rats in Group 3 were recovered and returned to normal ranges after consumption of olive leaf twice a day for one month.

The researchers concluded that, “the results of the present study suggest that OLE has an important role through its antioxidant advantage and effect in inhibiting hyperglycemia and ameliorating metabolic abnormalities induced by diabetes.”
